Peony clouds and potato pots

Middle of June already! We had the coldest May ever, that’s as far as I can remember. The weather really cheated us this year in Ontario. April had some wonderful days, very warm, very promising, just the right weather for planting, and so I did. The unusually cold May almost wiped out all my efforts. Certainly, some plants can withstand fairly harsh conditions, but not all. I doubt cucumbers will be doing well this year again because last year they really suffered of the frequently changing weather.

I am planting potatoes in pots this year. Nothing compares taste-wise to your own grown potato. I am a potato person, always have been, that’s pretty much my bread. My potato plants are getting bigger by the day, it looks like they will be blooming very soon.

My gardening space which I have reclaimed from the park is small. Large trees give a lot of shadow and their roots run far beyond the foliage. Therefore, I plant lots of vegetables and flowers in pots, that’s easy, no weeds, no plant illnesses, and you can change their location at any time. Therefore, yes, numerous pots are getting nicer by the day.

This year, peonies are blooming like never before. They come in different colors and shapes, but it feels like I have fragrant peony clouds floating around. The pink plain ones are nice, too, thanks to their bright color and beautifully shaped petals.

Last year was not very pleasing because of my health issues. It’s not that painless this year also, but I am very stubborn, and I always do whatever I have intended. I don’t want to feel sorry for myself and do nothing. However, I definitely need some relaxing breaks.

What’s better than taking them in this fantastic huge backyard? I’ve told before, it’s actually a very large private park and in the middle of town at that. Therefore, I have wildflowers and wild berries.

Everything strives to bloom, so much wild energy out there and some of it is absorbed by me.

Wishing everybody good summer!

  1. It all looks so beautiful, Inese! Potatoes in pots I have tried with some limited success, but I think my potato pots would have done better in shade. Too hot in direct sun here without the earth to draw away the heat. Too many days over 90 degrees!

Spring was very cool here, though drier than normal. A few very hot days, and back to cool again. Still way too dry! Some good rain is in the forecast for the weekend, and is much needed.

We had some of our own cherries for dessert last night, a mixture of fruit from the black tartarian, bing and wild cherry trees along the border. Most of the fruit trees are doing well from the long cool spring. We did lose two apple trees, grafts on dwarfing rootstock, due to drought last year. They were old trees, well established – planted by the previous owner – but I have read grafted trees on dwarfing rootstock are more prone to transpirational stress during droughts.

    1. Well, anything new we do in the garden is an experiment. I usually weigh out my chances by taking into consideration shadow, sunlight, possible heat or not, so forth. We never know for sure how something is going to turn out each year. I have shadow here, and like I said, I can move pots around. I have many other things in pots, too, I am usually short of soil and space. Some do really good, some not that good.
Wild cherries sounds very good. I will have tons of wild strawberries, managed to cover them all up with mesh and birds cannot eat them all now. Except, chipmunk, it’s such a sneaky creature, does more damage than squirrels.
I suppose we have to be extremely grateful that we can grow our own healthy food.

      1. That’s great.
I have hard times tolerating abnormal heat, and it’s brutal now for 3 days.
See how it goes? All kinds of things happening almost at the same time.
The heat affects all my other health issues, so taking everything very slowly for now.
Garden doing great, I water it.
We have to be grateful for many things. Except, I cannot stand what I cannot.

    1. I think it’s impossible to resist the attraction of these fragrant and very beautiful flowers. I just posted a few pictures because of limits, but peonies take quite a large spot in my flower garden.
They bloom more and more with each year. Since I move around, I always dig them out and replant. Therefore, some years I have many blooms, and some years almost none. They won’t start blooming straight after replanting.
One of my favorite flowers, too.
